<br />
It's been a while! I'm still firmly stuck in Art School mode so I haven't been working on any craft tutorials... life's kinda crazy, but awesome. I'm very grateful that I can study the things I love.<br />
<br />
If you want to keep an eye on my exploits, feel free to take a gander at my work on <a href="http://shishiko.tumblr.com/">shishiko.tumblr.com</a>. And stay tuned: I hope to work on some more craft tuts in the future (any requests?).<br />

<div style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 16.363636016845703px;">

<div style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 16.363636016845703px;">
For health reasons, I recently started a <a data-mce-href="http://blog.katescarlata.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fodmapschecklist-7.jpg" href="http://blog.katescarlata.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fodmapschecklist-7.jpg" style="color: #007bff;">FODMAP elimination diet</a>. It's done wonders for me, and I don't miss <em>too</em> many of the foods that I used to be able to eat, but I've had a hard time finding any corn syrup- and milk-free popsicles. And that simply will not do.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 16.363636016845703px;">
So I made my own, using a $1 popsicle mold set from Ralphs. I think they rock, so I'm sharing the (general) recipe.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 16.363636016845703px;">
<strong>[Any Kind of Fruit] + Lemonade Popsicles</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 16.363636016845703px;">
You will need:</div>
<ul style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 16.363636016845703px;">
<li>Fruit (ultimately, you'll need about 1/2 cup of fruit juice and/or pulp)</li>
<li>Lemon(s)</li>
<li>Sugar</li>
<li>Water</li>
</ul>
<div style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 16.363636016845703px;">
My popsicle maker holds about a cup of liquid, total, so that's the measurement I'm using: if yours holds more or less, increase or decrease the recipe proportionally.</div>
<ol style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 16.363636016845703px;">
<li>Make simple sugar syrup: cook equal amounts of sugar and water (I usually use a half cup of each, but then I have some left over, so it's up to you) until the sugar dissolves.</li>
<li>Dice the fruit, and mash it up well. I use a suribachi and surikogi (mortar and pestle) but you can use a blender or any other method you prefer. The object is to (generally) separate the pulp from the juice. </li>
<li>Add fruit juice (and pulp, if you want) to a measuring cup: you want about half a cup, maybe a little more, of fruit. </li>
<li>Add the juice of at least half a lemon (a full lemon works too- it all depends on your lemon preferences) to the measuring cup. </li>
<li>Add syrup to the measuring cup to bring the liquid amount up to one cup. </li>
<li>Stir, and taste. The mixture should taste both too sweet and too strong-- it settles as it freezes. Add more lemon, syrup, and/or fruit to taste, but remember that the mixture should have a very strong flavor. </li>
<li>Freeze.</li>
</ol>
<div style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 16.363636016845703px;">
And there you go. So far, I've tried honeydew, kiwi (make sure not to crush the seeds!), muscat grapes (pictured above), strawberries, and blackberries (all FODMAP-friendly fruit!), and they have all worked very well. Also, recently, I made some with syrup + lime juice + strips of fresh mint.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 16.363636016845703px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 16.363636016845703px;">
These are cheap, easy, and healthy, as far as frozen treats go-- and, more importantly, I think they're the yummiest popsicles I've ever had. Give 'em a try!</div>Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-59062268899598790602012-03-19T15:51:00.001-07:002012-03-19T15:56:34.753-07:00Color Theory for the Crafter<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix1-d0WDGKM0apMB5vLHV_lxIo0RBZDPBYMFsYZ_5Tqn5PUcBT4boSmaZH0t9tsMb0it2VlGQWqx78A1DZ698VxrEFxp_la8f6fi51fZYKT8nA4dohCnc117XvwD5XgDzdcjCHh4q17BTR/s1600/Theory.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix1-d0WDGKM0apMB5vLHV_lxIo0RBZDPBYMFsYZ_5Tqn5PUcBT4boSmaZH0t9tsMb0it2VlGQWqx78A1DZ698VxrEFxp_la8f6fi51fZYKT8nA4dohCnc117XvwD5XgDzdcjCHh4q17BTR/s1600/Theory.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Color can make or break any artistic project. It doesn't matter if you're painting your house, knitting a scarf, or beading a bracelet-- color is the first thing most people notice, and if the colors you choose "work" for the project, the effect is profoundly positive. If, however, you choose colors that don't "work"-- either they don't work together, or they don't match the project-- they can get in the way of the artistic statement you are trying to make.<br />
<div><br />
</div><div>I'm not trying to say that every color needs to harmonize perfectly-- trust me, I'm all about using bright and unexpected color combinations-- but I think it's important to understand the way that color works (and, more importantly, the way colors work <i>together</i>) if you want to make the most out of crafting.</div><div><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
</div><div><b><span style="font-size: large;">Part One: Colors on Their Own</span></b></div><div><br />
</div><div>Every color has four components. Depending on your source, you'll hear these components referred to by different names, but I'm going to go with the fairly standard Hue, Value, Saturation, and Warmth.</div><div><br />
</div><div><b>Hue:</b> Hue is what most people think of when they think of color. A color's hue is where it falls on the color wheel, or on the spectrum: some examples of hues are blue, orange, red, yellow-green, and red-violet. </div><div><br />
</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><b>Value</b>: Value is how light or dark a color is. If a color is very pale, it's high value-- if it's very dark, it's low value. Value ranges all the way from white to black, with every color in the rainbow found somewhere in the middle.</div><div><br />
</div><div><b>Saturation</b>: Saturation measures a color's purity. If the color is pure-- for example, the reddest red you can imagine-- then it has <i>high </i>saturation. If a color is muddy or grayed out, then it has <i>low</i> saturation. </div><div><br />
<b>Warmth</b>: Warmth is sorta an offshoot of Hue. There are warm colors and there are cool colors. Generally, yellow-greens, yellows, yellow-oranges, oranges, red-oranges, and pure reds are warm, while red-violets, violets, blues, blue-violets, and blue-violets are cool. The most interesting thing about warmth is that the warmer colors <i>advance </i>(that is, appear to come towards us) and the cooler colors <i>recede </i>(that is, appear to go away from us). </div><div><br />
</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><b> <span style="font-size: large;">Part 2: Combining Colors</span></b><br />
<br />
Now that we can understand and describe colors using the "terms of the trade", we can take a look at how to combine them in interesting ways. A lot of color combinations are easier to understand if you have use of a color wheel.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx4ECSDNtM9xjxymOO8E0f6MG1_2jmNuDklgUx6_RNmYxLFHExxY0BOpq5UKBBFPmCz4yLpCDBN4hWVAb_TQKR3wbwi6_9cvhUOCIAx0jFeYdc0jr_9FoxTRB8-FjefRgYKS0812udsVH1/s1600/ColorWheel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx4ECSDNtM9xjxymOO8E0f6MG1_2jmNuDklgUx6_RNmYxLFHExxY0BOpq5UKBBFPmCz4yLpCDBN4hWVAb_TQKR3wbwi6_9cvhUOCIAx0jFeYdc0jr_9FoxTRB8-FjefRgYKS0812udsVH1/s1600/ColorWheel.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A color wheel I just so happen to have created for this very purpose.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Now that we have all this theory, how do we go about <i>applying </i>it to crafts? In my experience there has always been one thing you have to do first:<br />
<br />
<b>Preliminary Step: Choose one color that you want or have to work with. This will be your "main color".</b><br />
<br />
Let's say you've always thought your daughter would look adorable in a denim dress-- choose denim blue as your first color. If you want to knit a scarf and have way too much of one color of yarn-- start with that color, and go from there. Sometimes you don't have much of a choice: if you're decorating a Christmas tree, your main color is dark green (assuming you don't have a bright pink tinsel tree!).<br />
The one suggestion I have is to start with a color that <i>has </i>a hue: for example, black won't really work with this system. If you need to start with black, white, or gray, please choose a second color that has a hue and use that as your main color.<br />
<br />
<b>Step One: Determine the hue of your "main color".</b><br />
<br />
This isn't a science. In fact, even color theorists have arguments as to whether or not something is "green" or "yellow-green". Don't worry about it too much. Just take a look at the color wheel and figure out where your color might go. Forget about saturation and stuff for now.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Step Two: Pick out another hue (or two) that works with your first hue. </b><br />
<br />
Easier said than done, right? Actually, this part's not so bad, if you use some Color Theory tricks. Due to science behind the ways our eyes perceive color, some hue combinations will <i>always </i>work. Let's take a look at them.<br />
<br />
<b><i>Analogous Colors:</i></b><br />
These are colors that are <i>next to</i> one another on the color wheel. For example, red and orange. Blue and blue-green. Yellow and yellow-green. Hues next to one another are very similar, so they harmonize very well. You could even use several of them together, like red, red-orange, and orange.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDotMRYZAjywQmJxk1GIp44NsqrYowEtdX36R2QikL_AIqKYmexWIxOMn1K5-XH_kiUTMTDncccYEShsUfAt7gZ8VGkjYX2d_VVJvkV0Br5qounNzSjjFVXBzxnNMHGUta_nP_Hzlqrpk7/s1600/Analogous.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDotMRYZAjywQmJxk1GIp44NsqrYowEtdX36R2QikL_AIqKYmexWIxOMn1K5-XH_kiUTMTDncccYEShsUfAt7gZ8VGkjYX2d_VVJvkV0Br5qounNzSjjFVXBzxnNMHGUta_nP_Hzlqrpk7/s1600/Analogous.jpg" /></a></div><br />
</div><div><br />
<b><i>Complimentary Colors: </i></b><br />
Compliments are colors that are <i>opposite</i> one another on the color wheel. Blue and orange, red and green, and yellow-orange and blue-violet are some examples. These hues work together because they are so different from one another that they cause a sort of "visual vibration", making them both look brighter when placed next to one another.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtOyvnWI93CcUWiUGq8VB8Q4r-2u05cFTtmASEMY64Lyyxgf_XaA1H7Si1B162Bdyq-nAVA8w_O3op3fAwAGShSZoAg7QADXMeVpsUp6AYc4EjqRIA0G3Al8NK0iNKCKDxO97LnUfjtheN/s1600/Complimentary.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtOyvnWI93CcUWiUGq8VB8Q4r-2u05cFTtmASEMY64Lyyxgf_XaA1H7Si1B162Bdyq-nAVA8w_O3op3fAwAGShSZoAg7QADXMeVpsUp6AYc4EjqRIA0G3Al8NK0iNKCKDxO97LnUfjtheN/s1600/Complimentary.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<i><b>Near-Complimentary Colors: </b></i><br />
Near-compliments are similar to compliments. You use the color wheel and find the hue opposite your main color-- and then you choose a color one spot to the right or left of your color's compliment. For example, you could pair blue with yellow-orange, or red with blue-green.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCH3oDaz9UdV0gFQSOaUlZFJBrmodWKszJPdCebJFAH26r7iuMD3zgfbwtWrXJFE9m4uaTMLjjVlg15e_z2BXpByhNeY_YgFBySMxIYVUj96zz9NXx0-KRgKV3z9H2FTnW4r_fUDgrf2bA/s1600/NearComplimentary.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCH3oDaz9UdV0gFQSOaUlZFJBrmodWKszJPdCebJFAH26r7iuMD3zgfbwtWrXJFE9m4uaTMLjjVlg15e_z2BXpByhNeY_YgFBySMxIYVUj96zz9NXx0-KRgKV3z9H2FTnW4r_fUDgrf2bA/s1600/NearComplimentary.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<b><i>Split Complimentary Colors:</i></b><br />
This is a three-color grouping that is also related to using complimentary colors. You choose your main color, then find its compliment: and use <i>both hues</i> on either side of its compliment. One example would be orange, blue-green, and blue-violet. These are often very pretty color schemes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLyfoC1IGRe8rpd9mzZEGHBTNxnhdGTwcy587Ucxko0AXBmTyeulbjeZ6mVXUYxSgInBDtVZP6MPVkXtZ81nSW-0bS4xKZynQitJJ-ZcwiftauJvowQ8bUpyW9wjOnLAErmKyZKBKjgYn3/s1600/SplitComplimentary.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLyfoC1IGRe8rpd9mzZEGHBTNxnhdGTwcy587Ucxko0AXBmTyeulbjeZ6mVXUYxSgInBDtVZP6MPVkXtZ81nSW-0bS4xKZynQitJJ-ZcwiftauJvowQ8bUpyW9wjOnLAErmKyZKBKjgYn3/s1600/SplitComplimentary.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<b><i>Triadic Colors:</i></b><br />
These are like complimentary colors, but instead of being opposite one another, they make an equilateral triangle (a triangle where all three sides are the same length) in the center of the color wheel. One example of a color triad is red, blue, and yellow-- another example is violet, green, and orange.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0Zujh_E61-x683MqWEXstfEcnxLHRLAQKgOrGZnjHQqFFkDYAyHNdIQ3kojSdnIh4qH3gbF-BobFgO3bBAiTTQenZ4LAo8o_BbF17S9HmhRawJ0A3RRf6tUqdZCdPOfvC9d6S8rZgtCxW/s1600/Triadic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0Zujh_E61-x683MqWEXstfEcnxLHRLAQKgOrGZnjHQqFFkDYAyHNdIQ3kojSdnIh4qH3gbF-BobFgO3bBAiTTQenZ4LAo8o_BbF17S9HmhRawJ0A3RRf6tUqdZCdPOfvC9d6S8rZgtCxW/s1600/Triadic.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<i><b>A Hue and An Achromatic Color:</b></i><br />
This is a combination where you choose a color with no hue (like black, white, or gray) as your second color. These combinations are often very bold, but they work pretty well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBqZL0bN3qwwC9fWuVNvqIEXqwXTHYdMdlacBSqVh4mR1jBQvUyCDexDijnpqhEFuNpDXUXbFvs9TrY4lYiGOdUvcOSUwdfxZS4AGU0oDAaZHbm0FJNaOEdT_iU1MHZ8ujmKp59m-7n7HG/s1600/Neutral.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBqZL0bN3qwwC9fWuVNvqIEXqwXTHYdMdlacBSqVh4mR1jBQvUyCDexDijnpqhEFuNpDXUXbFvs9TrY4lYiGOdUvcOSUwdfxZS4AGU0oDAaZHbm0FJNaOEdT_iU1MHZ8ujmKp59m-7n7HG/s1600/Neutral.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<b>Step Three: Think about value and saturation.</b><br />
<br />
So, by now you have chosen a "main color" and a "secondary hue" that goes with it. Perhaps you're thinking about violet and yellow. A bright violet and a sunny yellow may look very nice together-- but sometimes you want gentler, more sophisticated colors. This is where value and saturation come in.<br />
<br />
Let's take a look at some different saturation and value combinations.<br />
<br />
<i>High-saturation, middle-value: </i>These are the colors on the color wheel. They're very intense, without being darkened or washed out. Let's go ahead and call these <b>Intense</b> colors.<br />
<br />
<i>High-saturation, high-value:</i> These are like the colors on the color wheel, but with some white mixed in. They're still bright, but a little paler. These are usually called <b>Pastel </b>colors.<br />
<br />
<i>Low-saturation, high-value:</i> These colors are kind of like washed-out pastels. Think antique lace, or old, barely-tinted furniture and photographs. I'm going to call these the <b>Pale </b>colors.<br />
<br />
<i>High-saturation, low-value:</i> Add just a touch of black to the colors on the color wheel and you get these. They're still strong and vibrant, but they're a little darker. I'll call them <b>Dark </b>colors.<br />
<br />
<i>Low-saturation, middle-value:</i> Add some gray to the colors on the color wheel and you get these. These colors have been heavily neutralized, and they're neither bright nor dark. I call this group the <b>Muddy </b>colors.<br />
<br />
<i>Low-saturation, low-value:</i> These colors are both dark and muddy, as if you were looking at the color wheel on a dark and slightly misty night. I call these the <b>Dusky </b>colors.<br />
<br />
Most colors that you run across will fit into one of these groups.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEierPKoEknfFpPYHjc1ZentYGSlm9j-0dxDLbW1VYqGpBfsp-LS0NT1SwWbXKhHwQLdPLNKOio2xd8qOwRyYzT_XQsyNpOhGEu1jQLzL1adsQC_hduSKLRLnncRMsG8WoNgccDZPpVxLH_y/s1600/ValueandSaturation.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEierPKoEknfFpPYHjc1ZentYGSlm9j-0dxDLbW1VYqGpBfsp-LS0NT1SwWbXKhHwQLdPLNKOio2xd8qOwRyYzT_XQsyNpOhGEu1jQLzL1adsQC_hduSKLRLnncRMsG8WoNgccDZPpVxLH_y/s1600/ValueandSaturation.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Determine which group your main color fits into. Again, it's not an exact science: just make a guess.<br />
<br />
Now you have to figure out what group you want your secondary color to fit into. Sometimes it's not a choice: you want your secondary color to be blue, and you only have one ball of bright blue yarn, and the birthday party starts in an hour. When you do have the luxury of time and resources, you should think about how the value and saturation of your secondary color go with the value and saturation of your main color.<br />
<br />
In general, colors of the <i>same </i>value/saturation type go well together. For example, a Dusky violet and a Dusky yellow look pretty good, if you're going for something dark and subdued. If you want to see how different value/saturation types look together, check out these charts, and see which combinations feel right for your situation.<br />

See all of the different combinations you can create using one single pair of hues? Crazy, isn't it?<br />
<br />
<b>Examples: Putting it all together</b><br />
<br />
Here's are two examples of how to apply this method to crafting projects.<br />
<br />

There you go! I hope this tutorial will help you feel a little more confident when choosing colors, and that it will help get you through those inevitable "aaaaagh, I want to make this, but I have no ideas what colors to use!" moments.<br />
<br />
I hope you have a lot of fun playing with color!</div>Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-30892266805447865972012-01-04T08:54:00.000-08:002012-01-04T08:54:10.347-08:00Happy 2102!Happy New Year!<br />
<br />
I've recently finished my first semester as an art major. It's kind of amazing: when I was studying other "academic" disciplines, I'd end the semester without any measurable sort of progress, just a little more knowledge and a massive headache from ten-page final papers.<br />
<br />
As an art student, I have learned <i>skills</i>. A few months ago I didn't know what the heck gouache <i>was</i>, exactly, and now I know how to paint with it. I know how to compose groups of objects into pleasing compositions using the "Elements of Design". I went from being curious about charcoal to <i>hating </i>charcoal, and then to finding a use for it and maybe wanting to buy more charcoal sometime in the future. I know how to use artistic materials much, much better than I did before.<br />
<br />
I'm looking forward to next semester.<br />
<br />
The thing about art school is that I have less time for (and less inclination towards) crafts. I'm too busy being creative in other ways! But maybe I can share some of what I've learned in the art world with the crafting community at large. And maybe I'll share some of my art. :)Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-22119290988362604212011-10-26T09:28:00.000-07:002011-10-26T09:28:01.302-07:00On a non-crafty, but adorable note...<a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/corgis-in-costumes">90 corgis in costume.</a><br />

I usually don't incorporate fiber into my beadwork, but I decided to do something a little different this go-around. And what goes well with copper wire, wool yarn, and seed beads?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Elephants, of course!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

These earrings are constructed using a lot of copper wire (20 gauge in the centers of the yarn, and holding up the elephants; 24 gauge wrapped around the yarn); hand-dyed bits of wool yarn, glass elephant beads, size 4 swarovski bicones in Topaz (at the top of each earring), and size 11 seed beads scattered throughout.Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-30984411587484554532011-10-12T09:52:00.000-07:002011-10-12T09:52:00.436-07:00Saharan EarringsGoldstone is so incredibly sparkly, I love it. I'd had these beads around for a while, and finally decided to make something out of them-- they're simple, but the swarovski crystals and bits of chain really add a lot to the design, I think.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYlni15Gmopk18MTHJpeIGxE3Z_1xwLt7WsHrPvd35thQfl20iwstfsv59Linw_vgzQWkLJ0F2TcfZUnTTbzLjzqAWl1PHDP7lrgQH4v4wvz6LZbbrXjmgGxf_1CA8C8slQdEaMfbNXb70/s1600/uzumesaharanearrings.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYlni15Gmopk18MTHJpeIGxE3Z_1xwLt7WsHrPvd35thQfl20iwstfsv59Linw_vgzQWkLJ0F2TcfZUnTTbzLjzqAWl1PHDP7lrgQH4v4wvz6LZbbrXjmgGxf_1CA8C8slQdEaMfbNXb70/s1600/uzumesaharanearrings.jpg" /></a></div>Let's see... these are made from copper findings and copper chain, tiny size 11 seed beads, goldstone beads, and Swarovski size 4 bicones, in Indian Red (I think). These earrings are Earth-ier and Fire-ier than most of my creations (I am definitely a Water person when it comes to beadwork, and probably to art in general), and the goldstone reminds me of sparkling sand, hence their name.Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-28961429379635155652011-09-28T10:12:00.000-07:002011-09-28T10:14:48.309-07:00Photo Post: Pretty Things<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">These are from a Japanese-style garden I visited over the spring-- a little too late for most of the sakura, so I focused more on the scenery.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Participants were hooked up to an MRI and shown a video. The MRI information was sent to a computer which mapped the way the participants' blood flowed to different parts of their brains as they watched the video.<div><br />
</div><div>Then, (and this is the interesting part!) the computer used that data (and a library of of YouTube footage) to RECONSTRUCT what the participants had seen. The results were surprisingly accurate.</div><div><br />
</div><div>It seems like we're one step closer to being able to being able to watch videos of our dreams, or reconstruct our memories onto DVD. Interesting, isn't it?</div><div><br />
</div><div>Check out the article and watch the videos here: <a href="http://www.geekosystem.com/video-from-brain-activity/">http://www.geekosystem.com/video-from-brain-activity/</a></div><div><br />

Herringbone is the last of the major off-loom beadwork stitches. Sometimes known as Ndebele, it's a very old stitch, and it's a popular way to create a beaded strip or swatch of beaded 'fabric'. Like the herringbone stitches you see in knitting or other crafts, beaded herringbone consists of a series of beaded columns that tilt towards one another, creating a slight zigzag effect. It's a beautiful stitch, very versatile, and particularly effective in its tubular form.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
As with all of my tutorials so far, I'm going to be teaching the basic flat, rectangular version of the stitch.<br />
There are several ways to start off a piece of Herringbone work, but perhaps the best one to begin with is the brick stitch method. It gives you a nice, solid foundation to build up from. And the good news is that the very first row is the hardest. From there, you will be surprised at how quickly and easily Herringbone weave flows.<br />
<br />
<b>You will need:</b><br />
A needle<br />
Thread<br />
Beads (size 8 seed beads are used in this tutorial, but I usually use size 11 seed beads)<br />
<br />
On to the tutorial!<br />
<br />
As per usual, thread your needle. String on a tension bead: that is, string on a bead and then pass through it again going the same direction.<br />
I usually leave enough of a tail on to grasp as I work, but exactly how much string you leave on at the end is up to you (and what your project instructions say!).<br />
<br />

<b>Brick Stitch Beginning</b> (just the first row: every other row is different!)<br />
<em>(Row One)</em><br />
Pick up two beads.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPi8SZa0y5h_knsiv4EnofLd-xqbGU-66jFq7FiVvW53gllyPVMfkodY4AtUXUg8xrtuH17FGMTHFel1_FIYFfXTtPdAdIdvpgiL60A5nNY_kv7ebgkbKgJ_UAypDBGZ5S3bx6Jplxgrm8/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPi8SZa0y5h_knsiv4EnofLd-xqbGU-66jFq7FiVvW53gllyPVMfkodY4AtUXUg8xrtuH17FGMTHFel1_FIYFfXTtPdAdIdvpgiL60A5nNY_kv7ebgkbKgJ_UAypDBGZ5S3bx6Jplxgrm8/s1600/3.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Hold the beads so that the tension bead is at the top, then bring the needle downwards through the first bead you strung.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn_0IDKa7flA8cUVjQGZgQxCcORnRkFKH4qDkzZWEdqXc0Yksdk-n94mutND6U-wf9Tcla8I5vTJkT2B06HfcWIy1VT1DLM66fU2ogy8YuUyjK1URFSW8oakz1wzCCVIG62LbhycU5SvK3/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn_0IDKa7flA8cUVjQGZgQxCcORnRkFKH4qDkzZWEdqXc0Yksdk-n94mutND6U-wf9Tcla8I5vTJkT2B06HfcWIy1VT1DLM66fU2ogy8YuUyjK1URFSW8oakz1wzCCVIG62LbhycU5SvK3/s1600/4.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Take the needle up through the second bead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio4m1YHnw4qwQrgCnvExVvd7H26vadpsy31mK303uflaodkwyxTAy9jQw8bvj9OUVM-SUnWqhYnCgf_gvwFDO1NdOfsPpHRZReq28k7mVdGYdzMJTeDGStKr0JxMqP8EVxx1n1jtJ411af/s1600/6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio4m1YHnw4qwQrgCnvExVvd7H26vadpsy31mK303uflaodkwyxTAy9jQw8bvj9OUVM-SUnWqhYnCgf_gvwFDO1NdOfsPpHRZReq28k7mVdGYdzMJTeDGStKr0JxMqP8EVxx1n1jtJ411af/s1600/6.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
This creates a two-bead loop, where both beads are laying parallel with their edges touching. You're done with the first stitch in the brick stitch base.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>Add one new bead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNVkd6Jn9fljKGDwaEwNcpQX5xAC3bwfIpvlP7Ri3uWQh1h53h_2SRbefHra9gpoQfthkV-uhOWN0S2teK_xTePmqozbrOmz8d8loqma-pmiJMkkepth-9N5dD7we8bFTJbzcjDH8X-lTg/s1600/7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNVkd6Jn9fljKGDwaEwNcpQX5xAC3bwfIpvlP7Ri3uWQh1h53h_2SRbefHra9gpoQfthkV-uhOWN0S2teK_xTePmqozbrOmz8d8loqma-pmiJMkkepth-9N5dD7we8bFTJbzcjDH8X-lTg/s1600/7.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Bring the needle upwards through the second bead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7h_P7w9uW8PeRytTrtbh6ON_FGPNa_BlztoFoTNUZ0LwwjWpAmobOsF_J8NYFK80UsybRik4eZqV52XpM_eW8KO0ldSo45WSEwDvawECrhzeGCR4ToySTj9715de1j7vGmHscWUhdm5gb/s1600/8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7h_P7w9uW8PeRytTrtbh6ON_FGPNa_BlztoFoTNUZ0LwwjWpAmobOsF_J8NYFK80UsybRik4eZqV52XpM_eW8KO0ldSo45WSEwDvawECrhzeGCR4ToySTj9715de1j7vGmHscWUhdm5gb/s1600/8.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Bring the needle down through the new (third) bead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiocuEC0eldmTyrz-0lrB5soaqabK0h8vFxZR6uCLEugDAUsKSebTrHk6y7o8b4gzPqHpCsm9iTefHd404zyvqXnBTee9LXLDF2qJr2ZfKa5Umqn7mmHd87G9I2BAA3CqQBclWkr4qdJt4S/s1600/9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiocuEC0eldmTyrz-0lrB5soaqabK0h8vFxZR6uCLEugDAUsKSebTrHk6y7o8b4gzPqHpCsm9iTefHd404zyvqXnBTee9LXLDF2qJr2ZfKa5Umqn7mmHd87G9I2BAA3CqQBclWkr4qdJt4S/s1600/9.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Add a new bead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE4H_3DKey1Flf6tSN7R6Oq2kqLrOsRLhjyoLIq-b_xvjhrzx5m1eOTfORa1QeGD_f1DNyVu1AckvAmbAibPR65mOjyak5_Dicviuo1DwNhBOlDgN3zrsfJDQ4IQyBSxG854cJ42GWuDUK/s1600/11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE4H_3DKey1Flf6tSN7R6Oq2kqLrOsRLhjyoLIq-b_xvjhrzx5m1eOTfORa1QeGD_f1DNyVu1AckvAmbAibPR65mOjyak5_Dicviuo1DwNhBOlDgN3zrsfJDQ4IQyBSxG854cJ42GWuDUK/s1600/11.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Take the needle back down through the third bead,<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhaAm1zLFN2faaczBy7_X32t8e-Zkk8UFOtohNGeuC2lGdlsh59KZc7ujWvA2EdocOofrfkjIK3seP7wbB-HWYrDmzrGd0MahHbKVsOs7oEhn_LjPlWkZW2QjAFagb7oFZwGZosLVti72u/s1600/12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhaAm1zLFN2faaczBy7_X32t8e-Zkk8UFOtohNGeuC2lGdlsh59KZc7ujWvA2EdocOofrfkjIK3seP7wbB-HWYrDmzrGd0MahHbKVsOs7oEhn_LjPlWkZW2QjAFagb7oFZwGZosLVti72u/s1600/12.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>and then up through the fourth bead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLz_XtFqPfFnZ0uocoaQd5xS4TY-K0GMX_NnMp1CVuTlWhRK4a2a8vrbKtRx63RzJY1bXE3MtLQzKTgsBMI5lq__es-CAd57Ms_oz_GML6Dc3xpS5j7ewlrT7q056pjMs0W-dWQJ3yZgf-/s1600/13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLz_XtFqPfFnZ0uocoaQd5xS4TY-K0GMX_NnMp1CVuTlWhRK4a2a8vrbKtRx63RzJY1bXE3MtLQzKTgsBMI5lq__es-CAd57Ms_oz_GML6Dc3xpS5j7ewlrT7q056pjMs0W-dWQJ3yZgf-/s1600/13.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
String a new bead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju-2w3VfQgCe6G8232vwBOjPfJz-dh4A2vOcwLase7Kg6TXOMGugn7GZogEacw-j0NPRsjvgww1hSAQAVi68sSyQCWjLQSnl163ZhhlJR1d1FloyuaRu1SPmV9NIFeh-1NJAItQV1nRaas/s1600/14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju-2w3VfQgCe6G8232vwBOjPfJz-dh4A2vOcwLase7Kg6TXOMGugn7GZogEacw-j0NPRsjvgww1hSAQAVi68sSyQCWjLQSnl163ZhhlJR1d1FloyuaRu1SPmV9NIFeh-1NJAItQV1nRaas/s1600/14.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Add it onto the line of beads the exact same way you added the third bead: pass back up through the bead before it, and then down through the new bead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLGT696DlC8F0vwn8pTMbfHhPAqM1CJmTpaaAvFKZP-JWHIyPKXz3-p_wd5RspS6Nwcb-JzG58do8LGLTZkoP0DbhOA2pgtiCX0Fupg0SMiCjGzN9EjZK5239nWxTfBcFLd9HeRzPstpQi/s1600/15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLGT696DlC8F0vwn8pTMbfHhPAqM1CJmTpaaAvFKZP-JWHIyPKXz3-p_wd5RspS6Nwcb-JzG58do8LGLTZkoP0DbhOA2pgtiCX0Fupg0SMiCjGzN9EjZK5239nWxTfBcFLd9HeRzPstpQi/s1600/15.jpg" /></a></div><br />

String one more bead.<br />
<br />

Add it on the same way you added the fourth bead: pass back down through the bead before it, and then up through the new bead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVfT_v46Q-XHN6_yiROKmxomolj_fBk5qCRrRxDZyX5g8QCB6lg42PDdMk9owi404o4LKb7fnm5VPZM5RCfHdAfVyPQ8Q4-5CZ19s52ZdWKV_FJOaoCraMR3VI1fKPWz5OFSzMXkGYY_0p/s1600/17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVfT_v46Q-XHN6_yiROKmxomolj_fBk5qCRrRxDZyX5g8QCB6lg42PDdMk9owi404o4LKb7fnm5VPZM5RCfHdAfVyPQ8Q4-5CZ19s52ZdWKV_FJOaoCraMR3VI1fKPWz5OFSzMXkGYY_0p/s1600/17.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
That's it for the brick stitch portion: here's the loopy path the thread takes through that first row.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhcG6oWViy0DeuoginhEh01kdRMvsaDN5As-avQRqdAe0oloAmQqUMt31xbiKsVpShuK4YGyZ00NFK-TzQ2OBIojrKXiSpq9zCZxC1jN62PGfgV-jFZOi3E2Nbvx5SXt_a17aAnmWSD0n9/s1600/18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhcG6oWViy0DeuoginhEh01kdRMvsaDN5As-avQRqdAe0oloAmQqUMt31xbiKsVpShuK4YGyZ00NFK-TzQ2OBIojrKXiSpq9zCZxC1jN62PGfgV-jFZOi3E2Nbvx5SXt_a17aAnmWSD0n9/s1600/18.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Okay! You're done with the first row!<br />
<br />
And do you want to know the <em>awesome</em> thing about Herringbone? That first row was six stitches, (one stitch for each new bead,) right? For the next row, and for every row after that, you'll only have to do <em>three</em> stitches. It's pretty great.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Ocm5sNcPK2GOHiQMIFVVwsrXpFlmo1BG4Le5rMRvcfRTPbdIJ-0zoipqhQtmhZKgD2aCPHDt47lyFAvRS2TmUn5nchQSqLTb512snB4kWjKVs-IP1IarLMePJkfjHSh5t2CMVc3L9UDy/s1600/19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Ocm5sNcPK2GOHiQMIFVVwsrXpFlmo1BG4Le5rMRvcfRTPbdIJ-0zoipqhQtmhZKgD2aCPHDt47lyFAvRS2TmUn5nchQSqLTb512snB4kWjKVs-IP1IarLMePJkfjHSh5t2CMVc3L9UDy/s1600/19.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<b>The Herringbone Portion</b> (the rest of the piece)<br />
<br />
<em>(Row Two)</em><br />
Herringbone is worked in two columns per stitch. So, for each stitch, you will add <em>two</em> new beads.<br />
So pick up two beads,<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEF8LXfJ7-3zB6GFmK3GhekcqK8Qkb3P87trhgxpbVdJnJZ-2gK5DxsIICbFrz5Case-xs7Y1E1RRiMpSHEpYXZjilE8GdX0AF_1HDOokO4D8b0fKDxrjvlVuZxHoEZ6GTCroTarIxvuhQ/s1600/20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEF8LXfJ7-3zB6GFmK3GhekcqK8Qkb3P87trhgxpbVdJnJZ-2gK5DxsIICbFrz5Case-xs7Y1E1RRiMpSHEpYXZjilE8GdX0AF_1HDOokO4D8b0fKDxrjvlVuZxHoEZ6GTCroTarIxvuhQ/s1600/20.jpg" /></a></div><br />
and take the needle down through the second to last bead in the first row.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuUbFVyG8RRkHvV_RxeZuqwzZk1MZjuNAJoYlbUVmqWAhHwLBVLVhsbj4NLmZ3vIRxFhKS_CoqFmQayaVnBO2zpA1_L-nRYYKw0SzUzJUW08NPCFd0we0W5yQ59o1kifj6xHauzsiTTxfc/s1600/21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuUbFVyG8RRkHvV_RxeZuqwzZk1MZjuNAJoYlbUVmqWAhHwLBVLVhsbj4NLmZ3vIRxFhKS_CoqFmQayaVnBO2zpA1_L-nRYYKw0SzUzJUW08NPCFd0we0W5yQ59o1kifj6xHauzsiTTxfc/s1600/21.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
That's one stitch!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6rImvnhWRSJjIM-Sujm2mEhA0Y2C1HwgGkX37WimMMfx0zi_mAWpsusYnNrFBP_fLNTncXs72AdgYwKDfU8QFsJap4XBomKMWvGCSQ7peXeCT6cFtQlfT8hGg-AIj2rrjE8VWKTmVxC12/s1600/22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6rImvnhWRSJjIM-Sujm2mEhA0Y2C1HwgGkX37WimMMfx0zi_mAWpsusYnNrFBP_fLNTncXs72AdgYwKDfU8QFsJap4XBomKMWvGCSQ7peXeCT6cFtQlfT8hGg-AIj2rrjE8VWKTmVxC12/s1600/22.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Easy, right? Now you need to prepare for the next stitch, so take the needle back up through the fourth bead (the third to last bead) in the first row.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJIAu8aPc1nPamdHqtPoE0ltTGYyY64AnMCwBzgfTK2vPXYA6W9-WipdTZswgNJO7rtNR0Nt6W5QvekvbY3VtG6nd1Iy3ntYq5OFursRYI2ZddPwvb58sviKV8zi5jyZhRtPBEuGBmRX9X/s1600/23.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJIAu8aPc1nPamdHqtPoE0ltTGYyY64AnMCwBzgfTK2vPXYA6W9-WipdTZswgNJO7rtNR0Nt6W5QvekvbY3VtG6nd1Iy3ntYq5OFursRYI2ZddPwvb58sviKV8zi5jyZhRtPBEuGBmRX9X/s1600/23.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Add two more beads.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNNFYl6xAynfdEtWckQb4z6YGYk_lTZc5KtBqbLdEG_lBg3rCUta5tRJRZyZHDpYWYGQAFwNdqWSusBTPf4fu5xCL4GYmykpIBDY1wca6GEDqH8R4huO3LUWgcD5wTr5rgxPwVsuXYYUTK/s1600/24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNNFYl6xAynfdEtWckQb4z6YGYk_lTZc5KtBqbLdEG_lBg3rCUta5tRJRZyZHDpYWYGQAFwNdqWSusBTPf4fu5xCL4GYmykpIBDY1wca6GEDqH8R4huO3LUWgcD5wTr5rgxPwVsuXYYUTK/s1600/24.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />

<br />
Add two beads.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqHQn5tSpMeRRCfEpWF6lqvD474vK4CqT34wqQD0LFYJswkGPYgx0Kq9upU2Ej7io5zJOcgLUEi4fLyLYVuWbPkyAT0OddE3weV3858EfqOAyfbTiQ9bcIMRpdC-XqNgK6yd46GlVo3QtT/s1600/27.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqHQn5tSpMeRRCfEpWF6lqvD474vK4CqT34wqQD0LFYJswkGPYgx0Kq9upU2Ej7io5zJOcgLUEi4fLyLYVuWbPkyAT0OddE3weV3858EfqOAyfbTiQ9bcIMRpdC-XqNgK6yd46GlVo3QtT/s1600/27.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Take the needle down through the first bead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsIXJmyPGe2bh0XR1CHUv2UNNNap9XPc865ld1B75pbjsWfv7HsseQLuCaGaJHz22P87pJG4GeKNyN4Hm1xwh3EbY6X7gRQYfWEsHr44nOMjBh0DJCzNk0WfCQKA50gv4Axga_rw9Shlo9/s1600/28.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsIXJmyPGe2bh0XR1CHUv2UNNNap9XPc865ld1B75pbjsWfv7HsseQLuCaGaJHz22P87pJG4GeKNyN4Hm1xwh3EbY6X7gRQYfWEsHr44nOMjBh0DJCzNk0WfCQKA50gv4Axga_rw9Shlo9/s1600/28.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
You're done with the second row of the project-- the first row of actual herringbone stitch! Super-simple, right?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8s3Q5H8-1ZLgZNWRHL-kJ49lJp0HSOTIzESit30p5cEslb2C61ffaCi30-9ugsbbc9VLLLxWIjxAxd113l00dNUl04EK8D3dRUXqNb1YdWEWjVN_zgb9kgqO9Ju9cN1hrlU3avMbPNxq1/s1600/29.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8s3Q5H8-1ZLgZNWRHL-kJ49lJp0HSOTIzESit30p5cEslb2C61ffaCi30-9ugsbbc9VLLLxWIjxAxd113l00dNUl04EK8D3dRUXqNb1YdWEWjVN_zgb9kgqO9Ju9cN1hrlU3avMbPNxq1/s1600/29.jpg" /></a></div><br />
But... we have a problem, don't we?<br />
<br />
How do we get the needle back up to the top of the work so we can put on row 3?<br />
<br />
If we could keep following the pattern so far, we would take the needle up through the next bead... but there <em>is</em> no next bead. We can't take it up through the previous bead, because then we'd have to start the next row in the <em>middle</em> of the row (and that would be a real mess!). Also, we can't just pass back upwards through the first bead: the thread would just pull right out and undo our last stitch!<br />
<br />
The solution lies in the thread connecting the bottoms of the first two beads in the first row. If you loop your working thread around it, then you can just pass back up through the first bead and start your next row!<br />
<br />
So bring your needle behind the work, and pull it through to the front in the little space between the first two beads of row one, right above the connecting thread. That should catch your working thread on that little bit of thread from the beginning of the project, thus anchoring it in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmyeW1wXDkyGYkL07iRGjFiDlJyOyJGq0zz53y3R0WX_XImWTx_f8WZ1sbu3GSdv2WSPP8nB9OP86u1fV_FHnSEpoqDUM1pARPyLTvpeECoY9S5PmvrUiWZcChUebT55iRM_IIPQXVFCX4/s1600/30.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmyeW1wXDkyGYkL07iRGjFiDlJyOyJGq0zz53y3R0WX_XImWTx_f8WZ1sbu3GSdv2WSPP8nB9OP86u1fV_FHnSEpoqDUM1pARPyLTvpeECoY9S5PmvrUiWZcChUebT55iRM_IIPQXVFCX4/s1600/30.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Bring your needle back up through the first bead of row one and the last added bead of row two:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjew2DdHVO1lQf0TlXNoVP5zV_6cFi-45v5dpFHx5kE01pG2wLWVylZCQx7LZjoBmmyxxGZbdAqAtP3ZIfnyH8yw_zWnRV6EgTIHYV515lP0iCQLUB5kRbr65rVVNm-VaBML0UkfaiFDeRg/s1600/31.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjew2DdHVO1lQf0TlXNoVP5zV_6cFi-45v5dpFHx5kE01pG2wLWVylZCQx7LZjoBmmyxxGZbdAqAtP3ZIfnyH8yw_zWnRV6EgTIHYV515lP0iCQLUB5kRbr65rVVNm-VaBML0UkfaiFDeRg/s1600/31.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
and you're all set to start row three!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw2SIQ5UbvsecGRnO3fH9lnVc-9rxTAk7nCubgYpnTOk5ng-CARMZyiwKGu0lhmM4hkh0rS_U8pdIXKe9ZEGAg0Swtl7PgUT91WjMe7yc_3_-_3Ig0fUQYGQZL7GiIALwVHimggXLApb7N/s1600/32.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw2SIQ5UbvsecGRnO3fH9lnVc-9rxTAk7nCubgYpnTOk5ng-CARMZyiwKGu0lhmM4hkh0rS_U8pdIXKe9ZEGAg0Swtl7PgUT91WjMe7yc_3_-_3Ig0fUQYGQZL7GiIALwVHimggXLApb7N/s1600/32.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<em>(Row Three)</em><br />
Add two new beads.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYCHsZ3bBNkCa-5jkAglfFSqxB3bDgYWAYSts8Gkg_kfaGY7vv9NX7JBF3H2fM1ggapSoxJ2HKm91mPktdNAZau8cpgN-AhGf0r2BhlfgeY0rbYvXNSx8TnCn12uaCrACGFkI6gJTNI_5e/s1600/33.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYCHsZ3bBNkCa-5jkAglfFSqxB3bDgYWAYSts8Gkg_kfaGY7vv9NX7JBF3H2fM1ggapSoxJ2HKm91mPktdNAZau8cpgN-AhGf0r2BhlfgeY0rbYvXNSx8TnCn12uaCrACGFkI6gJTNI_5e/s1600/33.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Bring the needle down through the second to last bead you added in row 2, but be careful to not take it down through the bead underneath it as well. It should only be going through one bead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6w5mtqUU5zSSQx3cqx06ePIUxknOzEJav0slQ1rfNfNbHK5v_JMZ7EnkEyHZ4vn2Le30tyhZPA-O5TKeSZRiD0iNtvbxOSePqOfPNB2nv9DibaeG7Vog16gaJVuZIB-yYMd2lw87aNMU_/s1600/34.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6w5mtqUU5zSSQx3cqx06ePIUxknOzEJav0slQ1rfNfNbHK5v_JMZ7EnkEyHZ4vn2Le30tyhZPA-O5TKeSZRiD0iNtvbxOSePqOfPNB2nv9DibaeG7Vog16gaJVuZIB-yYMd2lw87aNMU_/s1600/34.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Bring the needle up through the third to last bead you added in row two (the third from the left).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjgE8wiiBCgCv_1apVLGmSnuGe2GEM71wgsUe0u0bVKBPXF_duEJnnJN1TVVe6TQKGuVmt63iZvyEM4NA85UzEGHKCKbHkfz4Dp1Rh5l3lLItvqPnl2KwmENDShRR-rux5ALodcLoas_Dp/s1600/35.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjgE8wiiBCgCv_1apVLGmSnuGe2GEM71wgsUe0u0bVKBPXF_duEJnnJN1TVVe6TQKGuVmt63iZvyEM4NA85UzEGHKCKbHkfz4Dp1Rh5l3lLItvqPnl2KwmENDShRR-rux5ALodcLoas_Dp/s1600/35.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Add two new beads. Take the needle down through fourth from the left bead in row 2 (again, being careful not to also pass through the bead below it in row 1),<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigWIMSgXUlLTmdDEM8E-FK0KQUwnnLKVaJc0XOzHVfgvjq1QmJQdSm6IEwwYkvnnQf04YXtNqq5KWOzFa58Wx9WhVso7GvWbNpe7wLoNeyVwzIAypeKKTe193q5aAAf0rw9sn8Jb_-9DzS/s1600/36.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigWIMSgXUlLTmdDEM8E-FK0KQUwnnLKVaJc0XOzHVfgvjq1QmJQdSm6IEwwYkvnnQf04YXtNqq5KWOzFa58Wx9WhVso7GvWbNpe7wLoNeyVwzIAypeKKTe193q5aAAf0rw9sn8Jb_-9DzS/s1600/36.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
and bring the needle up through the fifth from the left bead in row two.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMGLd_eHijunF3gQ62PCUJe1R3t1PPPLzFMKyy3HhQz3thFN67nMM8aOTLwt4ZF5eMNXQukMfuw26qCsLTmYzBHJ0mzTQS52NXKCAG6SRP1UNboAcynBTuxNb_Sl93Rvn3ElJzTGnP6eAu/s1600/37.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMGLd_eHijunF3gQ62PCUJe1R3t1PPPLzFMKyy3HhQz3thFN67nMM8aOTLwt4ZF5eMNXQukMfuw26qCsLTmYzBHJ0mzTQS52NXKCAG6SRP1UNboAcynBTuxNb_Sl93Rvn3ElJzTGnP6eAu/s1600/37.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Add two more beads. Take the needle down through the rightmost bead in row 2.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdrLER-QEK0L0Q7KXDkZLFaVQt147Gtn1EW57c5letGA0osCzk6u6KBlN3VXHcBEY3cV4pIWcgJ9ovVricriBJDAIa-xWuTQUU3mLF3friCQ9M7vrEEiNeQd_Tb0Sfvy3KMCzDG2TThHcB/s1600/38.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdrLER-QEK0L0Q7KXDkZLFaVQt147Gtn1EW57c5letGA0osCzk6u6KBlN3VXHcBEY3cV4pIWcgJ9ovVricriBJDAIa-xWuTQUU3mLF3friCQ9M7vrEEiNeQd_Tb0Sfvy3KMCzDG2TThHcB/s1600/38.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
OK, you're done with row three!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNOe0WQ-HNO75qAuFc3DWuxDqVWth7blS4svJ3-L3dnyIKYmAaDD4qQjmb895jXwQjQ-WcUVPRCXWV_7kPVNRucv2yOE2Jnzx92Iz_qiqRT44XZO-u35lTOXIZr4xf86Nq4-r7iK_LcpA0/s1600/39.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNOe0WQ-HNO75qAuFc3DWuxDqVWth7blS4svJ3-L3dnyIKYmAaDD4qQjmb895jXwQjQ-WcUVPRCXWV_7kPVNRucv2yOE2Jnzx92Iz_qiqRT44XZO-u35lTOXIZr4xf86Nq4-r7iK_LcpA0/s1600/39.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Now we need to prepare for row 4. Remember the trick we used last time, of catching the thread loop on our working thread to secure our work? Let's use it again! But this time, we need to catch the thread that connects the bottom of the rightmost two beads of row 2.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR8zcsOIPenFlxjuKoMfvSdfGlZBlW47VNz-BF7HpbNNZJQAf-68T_XxURKS4F0-zRJ-F17FGJRi7mcPCPP94fQprZYx9Tra_tH6leGVLkXtmztyF2J545xIFQPbqeNOiGJX48ExO1JaPQ/s1600/40.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR8zcsOIPenFlxjuKoMfvSdfGlZBlW47VNz-BF7HpbNNZJQAf-68T_XxURKS4F0-zRJ-F17FGJRi7mcPCPP94fQprZYx9Tra_tH6leGVLkXtmztyF2J545xIFQPbqeNOiGJX48ExO1JaPQ/s1600/40.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Cool, now take your needle back up through the rightmost bead of row two AND the rightmost bead of row 3.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuXJNcuV2ogO49FzfAGFVDcsHCMbGNmAKvQDXQG-kqYGPwPzixzuII90Bj1KFU_3CU9sq-ub3u5gktMiAxn2FVvoaegozy_Fiu92Q83s2eKBWNHalOgjJf8AaED6_-xQcjP4DwtwVmKD-e/s1600/41.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuXJNcuV2ogO49FzfAGFVDcsHCMbGNmAKvQDXQG-kqYGPwPzixzuII90Bj1KFU_3CU9sq-ub3u5gktMiAxn2FVvoaegozy_Fiu92Q83s2eKBWNHalOgjJf8AaED6_-xQcjP4DwtwVmKD-e/s1600/41.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
You're all set up for row 4! Work row 4 (and every row after it) using the same pattern you saw in row 3: add two beads, go down through one bead, and up through the next one. When you get to the end of the row, use the trick to catch the thread and then bring the needle up and start the next row.<br />
<br />
Here's a finished swatch of Herringbone weave:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJRHzN-9hJ5MaTAtXso5lQve0_gXjD35E-kDV_Rf6Njhg6dF1eB1ter8wmHVO7YfGYwXgaw20kv_8PTatXjrZKTPylKnCAd8z3RYV4Hi7ASrx1L4lBQfXpZ0QA9K9m94gjcxb_LPARXQpy/s1600/42.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJRHzN-9hJ5MaTAtXso5lQve0_gXjD35E-kDV_Rf6Njhg6dF1eB1ter8wmHVO7YfGYwXgaw20kv_8PTatXjrZKTPylKnCAd8z3RYV4Hi7ASrx1L4lBQfXpZ0QA9K9m94gjcxb_LPARXQpy/s1600/42.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
And here's the thread path:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJSunah-RXQX_AY4ae-P9maU1u-uqQCflkY0MPpRdfp4zBA-VcKlzesVD786rruwmbTvkHNM8ae-54H-oaRm8ud-9i1WQxp_j4qoCEAvqRpzR4klk28u4vvmIfehBg9mWwIURa0WCHd8mW/s1600/43.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJSunah-RXQX_AY4ae-P9maU1u-uqQCflkY0MPpRdfp4zBA-VcKlzesVD786rruwmbTvkHNM8ae-54H-oaRm8ud-9i1WQxp_j4qoCEAvqRpzR4klk28u4vvmIfehBg9mWwIURa0WCHd8mW/s1600/43.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Also, here are some examples of what you can do with this versatile stitch:<br />
<br />

These are the most austere and modern of the group. I love all the different chains involved. Yay for chains of multiple metals all grouped together!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_hkbSAl5EZgS3nqxeyrbkhZ36ALYoGpoiX6TEJAdd95oXmqbCy8V04QGV1qMol_xWF1gIJRqUKdsvyM5DigoSmGr-Xe9hyphenhyphenLCwhOfBZUm9PPgaCAi_r5qlLNgen-17OI683nrPXpb3Jzmb/s1600/uzumeindustriallanternearri.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_hkbSAl5EZgS3nqxeyrbkhZ36ALYoGpoiX6TEJAdd95oXmqbCy8V04QGV1qMol_xWF1gIJRqUKdsvyM5DigoSmGr-Xe9hyphenhyphenLCwhOfBZUm9PPgaCAi_r5qlLNgen-17OI683nrPXpb3Jzmb/s1600/uzumeindustriallanternearri.jpg" /></a></div>The beads are snakeskin agate, the beadcaps are gold (I got them as a gift... what, you though I actually bought any non-copper findings?... actually, my partner has talked me into purchasing some gunmetal, so, yes, yes I have... but no gold, yet...) the hooks and headpins are copper, and the chains are copper and silver (and probably some aluminum-- I deconstructed some necklaces I had as a kid and that's where the non-copper came from!). Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-85935494627764451452011-07-20T09:11:00.000-07:002011-07-20T09:11:12.358-07:00Industrial Archaism NecklaceThis is a collaboration between me and my partner-- he wrapped the big chunk of 20-gauge wire in smaller wire and gave it to me to do something with. I stuck some chain on both ends and added some wired swirls and pretty gray beads, and, voila, instant necklace!<br />
<br />
I like jewelry with an industrial component (gray, lots of non-gold and non-silver metal, geometric shapes), and this necklace successfully gives me that vibe-- however, the copper-wire swirls and the shape of the front piece remind me of ancient Greek jewelry, hence the name.<br />
<br />

It's made of copper chains and findings, size 20 copper wire, size 28 copper wire, size 22 copper wire (going through the beads and making the spirals), and czech glass beads.Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-53204839908622821932011-07-20T08:51:00.000-07:002011-07-20T08:51:45.257-07:00Omoi EarringsMore of a descriptor than a name, <i>omoi </i>means "heavy" in Japanese. These earrings are actually quite heavy to wear, but, more than that, their weight-like structure and metal components give them an overall feeling of heaviness, hence the name.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEk4MJf5P6h0a2_QcPWVZPiP6uXy-FnyqoXr3ER71-az4RmW3OkhemJj9RdWeeVmgm5jPyeojqQkgbTIRJeaLIKeZ97if91hhgJKfYnx1Q4ZfkmDpiLHldPI9Y5M6huWOc1p3KvZiJG8is/s1600/uzumeomoiearrings.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEk4MJf5P6h0a2_QcPWVZPiP6uXy-FnyqoXr3ER71-az4RmW3OkhemJj9RdWeeVmgm5jPyeojqQkgbTIRJeaLIKeZ97if91hhgJKfYnx1Q4ZfkmDpiLHldPI9Y5M6huWOc1p3KvZiJG8is/s1600/uzumeomoiearrings.jpg" /></a></div><br />
These earrings are pretty long, and they're constructed of copper findings and copper chain, with tiger's eye and ruby quartz beads. I'm not sure of the metal of the hardware bits-- I'll have to go back to Home Depot, heh.<br />
<br />
I really like these earrings-- they're modern, vaguely Steampunk, and they make a bold statement. It just goes to show that you don't need to just use metal <i>made </i>for jewelry when you make your jewelry!Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-46382474247697973972011-07-20T08:42:00.000-07:002011-07-20T08:42:08.576-07:00Everything But The... NecklaceShamelessly inspired by some of my favorite Ben and Jerry's ice cream, the Everything But The... Necklace is a strange mishmash of awesomeness. It sprung into being when my partner, a former library putting-books-in-order guy who's very sensitive to detailed organization, decided to take it upon himself to organize my (hopelessly jumbled) bead trays.<br />
<br />
Thanks to his hard work, I had a bunch of beadwork components- unfinished earrings, extra bracelet bits, things that I wire-wrapped just for the fun of it- that I didn't have anything specific to do with.<br />
<br />
What does any self-respecting crafter do in that situation? She puts them all together!<br />
<br />
Thusly was this necklace born.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1radKN3emoNDXtV-_mNDWtMQkpSv8PGBILS-0Xgm-NS49-dS8sBeAEhMcaoof8GPxyFitE8pcOnkfvpall8DTqijwbiOmIvAEymUHp0tGJ_G3DUB35mGOGvGFWSa77q6CBNoZ35kU8b0k/s1600/uzumeeverythingbuttheneckla.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1radKN3emoNDXtV-_mNDWtMQkpSv8PGBILS-0Xgm-NS49-dS8sBeAEhMcaoof8GPxyFitE8pcOnkfvpall8DTqijwbiOmIvAEymUHp0tGJ_G3DUB35mGOGvGFWSa77q6CBNoZ35kU8b0k/s1600/uzumeeverythingbuttheneckla.jpg" /></a></div>Again, I can't give you the size right now, but it's pretty long. I haven't had the opportunity to wear it yet, but I think it would go well over some very simple clothes, to give them a bit of an artisty spark.Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-22852318666956481872011-07-20T08:34:00.000-07:002011-07-20T08:34:23.490-07:00Autumn Cascade EarringsI've been wanting to try constructing jewelry with wire a little more, and these are the result. They were inspired by a photograph of maple leaves in the fall, and I tried to catch both the color and the feel of a shower of cascading <i>momiji</i>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcAfZ6pn5Y67JQJZ_TMALeDEfzvqm7u6F5GQAOJtFyZRCHWgx3P0a6CtqiaASF-bMCEX_id5pB5tc2rRuU2Tm_fpYQLifioHwnaJ8GTjdIkTH_P0sADV98THUNclRxbg9uTsxz9ORXk2aj/s1600/uzumeautumncascadeearrings.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcAfZ6pn5Y67JQJZ_TMALeDEfzvqm7u6F5GQAOJtFyZRCHWgx3P0a6CtqiaASF-bMCEX_id5pB5tc2rRuU2Tm_fpYQLifioHwnaJ8GTjdIkTH_P0sADV98THUNclRxbg9uTsxz9ORXk2aj/s1600/uzumeautumncascadeearrings.jpg" /></a></div>I don't have them on me, so I can't give you the size specs right now, but you can see by the standard hooks that these are fairly small earrings. They're very light, too. They're constructed with 20-gauge copper wire as the base with size 8 seed beads strung onto it, a variety of copper chains, and some czech glass AB red and yellow beads.<br />
<br />
I can't wait for autumn when I can wear these more often!Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-57823180320764638222011-06-16T10:48:00.000-07:002011-06-16T10:48:43.051-07:00On a non-crafty note...What a journey the last few months have been! I won't go into the details, but suffice it to say that I began this blog as an Anthropology grad school hopeful and I'm writing today as an Art (Graphic Design) major undergrad. Or at least I will be when the fall semester starts. <br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The Spiral Rope is another of the major off-loom beadweaving stitches. It has a very simple structure that can be modified to create all kinds of beautiful spirals, and it is often used to create bracelets and necklaces.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here's how you do it!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">You will need: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Beads (I usually use a combination of size 11 and size 8 seed beads, but I'm using just 8s for the tutorial)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A needle</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Thread</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A spiral rope has two major components: the spine, and the loops. The ratio of one to the other decides how the finished rope will look. For example, if you have a very short spine component with a very large loop, you'll come out with a big, soft spiral. If your loop is only slightly larger than your spine component, you'll end up with a slim, tight spiral. I suggest that you use an odd number of loop beads: there are more finishing possibilities that way. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">As shown, I'll be using a three spine bead to five loop bead ratio. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzfvO1hYEyQuKSZMZlzVmbEJBAkyLu3okKo3ZTUN7_BR2bJuFNcxaSSNbI1fGGhRMjQcRPXvAEcWOmkTlAtKbCmunrz9Jbj4VCKnZsTAzAVcHWe_TBbQW2imrHYSn4p6oXonSrR-Zu1vqd/s1600/intro.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzfvO1hYEyQuKSZMZlzVmbEJBAkyLu3okKo3ZTUN7_BR2bJuFNcxaSSNbI1fGGhRMjQcRPXvAEcWOmkTlAtKbCmunrz9Jbj4VCKnZsTAzAVcHWe_TBbQW2imrHYSn4p6oXonSrR-Zu1vqd/s1600/intro.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Add three spine beads: they will be your first spine component.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKjyFW7R0-ldAg6Vkk7SStq_oZxXs2LLrTrGzA5RCk0YLMg4KAyjJuiB0ST1EnkRbfZu0P0qMVW0AMmXcUI3Q-PMNiy7uHQtWePaBeJUqminREkHp_nuoGi1X551VYoimhqqkU_ubRFo2h/s1600/Spiral+Rope+006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKjyFW7R0-ldAg6Vkk7SStq_oZxXs2LLrTrGzA5RCk0YLMg4KAyjJuiB0ST1EnkRbfZu0P0qMVW0AMmXcUI3Q-PMNiy7uHQtWePaBeJUqminREkHp_nuoGi1X551VYoimhqqkU_ubRFo2h/s1600/Spiral+Rope+006.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Now, add 5 loop beads: they'll be your first loop.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIC_nIktP_zQTPidWyhtu2jLCBqtjho9J9ijvHDFQWuhJjqTAk4h_cvkN0qT_NLDJ4YoOVCJgbhMm22FfoLkmAkPovCbpjtLYIl_Wbxq0HIdLYIsOUmSxFT4dInDGhElFnYTYhxxU5hDud/s1600/Spiral+Rope+010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIC_nIktP_zQTPidWyhtu2jLCBqtjho9J9ijvHDFQWuhJjqTAk4h_cvkN0qT_NLDJ4YoOVCJgbhMm22FfoLkmAkPovCbpjtLYIl_Wbxq0HIdLYIsOUmSxFT4dInDGhElFnYTYhxxU5hDud/s1600/Spiral+Rope+010.JPG" /></a></div><br />
To actually create the loop, pass upwards through the three spine beads you have on your thread.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5Pg1UPhThgSO_F7zCmfeeww8jhsZP5ZTibN2cT9V3yQLcvlH6GKjF0FXw4hCQxmwWYc9iTbis2NEfovm9upptGeLPNsSAyioorvQ6om0cAdx9aUN-sXGNuSkqT3SNb_k-JMaX4uHWgFDy/s1600/Spiral+Rope+012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5Pg1UPhThgSO_F7zCmfeeww8jhsZP5ZTibN2cT9V3yQLcvlH6GKjF0FXw4hCQxmwWYc9iTbis2NEfovm9upptGeLPNsSAyioorvQ6om0cAdx9aUN-sXGNuSkqT3SNb_k-JMaX4uHWgFDy/s1600/Spiral+Rope+012.JPG" /></a></div><br />
OK, that's the first loop!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwzXEYrjwpvNcaQzo00oD3AYH_SuuosG7HcnhSIcAuHeu3o61R60KOIJF2F3bGYef_XXL2m0Ye_Wn2frb2jKqht0wk7HixIut8hEj_duFGmmr8Z3oxZvOV1YCeg81SzM-Hoiwd7Zkgf3Gk/s1600/Spiral+Rope+015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwzXEYrjwpvNcaQzo00oD3AYH_SuuosG7HcnhSIcAuHeu3o61R60KOIJF2F3bGYef_XXL2m0Ye_Wn2frb2jKqht0wk7HixIut8hEj_duFGmmr8Z3oxZvOV1YCeg81SzM-Hoiwd7Zkgf3Gk/s1600/Spiral+Rope+015.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Time to get ready for the second loop. To do so, thread on one spine bead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik69r9w6cj_vaMZ5XejYvjM1ZqGtayz_Xkrfn8H29SJwCZifubF2qEgj-Gm7VuHLkGgugGj6gMN6SDI-Km-Gudq-oKrUYivHw8YzXf9drqGHA__Bkyjb32q3R_eNA-s-klPsEpI9yncQMR/s1600/Spiral+Rope+018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik69r9w6cj_vaMZ5XejYvjM1ZqGtayz_Xkrfn8H29SJwCZifubF2qEgj-Gm7VuHLkGgugGj6gMN6SDI-Km-Gudq-oKrUYivHw8YzXf9drqGHA__Bkyjb32q3R_eNA-s-klPsEpI9yncQMR/s1600/Spiral+Rope+018.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Now, add on 5 more beads: they'll be your second loop.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHbfcog6AmTN8D8VDZHifNNG-Iu6Km2rIj4H2L2hnZhIqM5AD4GfwZIa2c7agsBLYgfZJBazR0866EoJ-JKzCxKP95cSuyzp3dGyXG1I5Gq2xG9UtEV_r2TTavzgaOfdwkAt6RD7egQZVe/s1600/Spiral+Rope+023.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHbfcog6AmTN8D8VDZHifNNG-Iu6Km2rIj4H2L2hnZhIqM5AD4GfwZIa2c7agsBLYgfZJBazR0866EoJ-JKzCxKP95cSuyzp3dGyXG1I5Gq2xG9UtEV_r2TTavzgaOfdwkAt6RD7egQZVe/s1600/Spiral+Rope+023.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> OK, now we need to make the second loop. To make it look the same as the first loop, we need a ratio of 3 spine beads to 5 loop beads, right? So pass your needle upwards through the top three spine beads.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF-cCOd4cv5GIwD7YYRT41HXI8CcDvIGHLUu1JlwjXI0nunh-mRYW1IrlzdDerdUczuzWQC6qAXE9G2ZoooKV-GXDKCXedrS2bFzLMHuMSeIMG3PD4qytOxkXt8JZUsb375-jSofMHa5fD/s1600/Spiral+Rope+024.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF-cCOd4cv5GIwD7YYRT41HXI8CcDvIGHLUu1JlwjXI0nunh-mRYW1IrlzdDerdUczuzWQC6qAXE9G2ZoooKV-GXDKCXedrS2bFzLMHuMSeIMG3PD4qytOxkXt8JZUsb375-jSofMHa5fD/s1600/Spiral+Rope+024.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Two loops down! Not so bad, right?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-vjHLCM56LmYETBMnGkqt_KFRRe-_9gHVyofuQXgG_zWoH1Buw66PhqyCkebums06pg89d2SxXc-bTBovE3PtedCESWbJS3Hxp_SbzMu-OP3v-i6ezedAMQS4shQIDyagdfp7PJDC2-W8/s1600/Spiral+Rope+027.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-vjHLCM56LmYETBMnGkqt_KFRRe-_9gHVyofuQXgG_zWoH1Buw66PhqyCkebums06pg89d2SxXc-bTBovE3PtedCESWbJS3Hxp_SbzMu-OP3v-i6ezedAMQS4shQIDyagdfp7PJDC2-W8/s1600/Spiral+Rope+027.JPG" /></a></div><br />
As with the last loop, start loop 3 by threading on one spine bead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwa27yPutWLTVyVVm06CkcOpzRWHA_KwElsu3Z62pQpuUhoIhuvkbyZ4SHpchHr2wXwjch2fD5FRpeRDP43kPDVoMgN_FCog_ZOQFLkFwIhPZCab4RqDv5646ElgMCDtj2E2GZua07Z3Hb/s1600/Spiral+Rope+030.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwa27yPutWLTVyVVm06CkcOpzRWHA_KwElsu3Z62pQpuUhoIhuvkbyZ4SHpchHr2wXwjch2fD5FRpeRDP43kPDVoMgN_FCog_ZOQFLkFwIhPZCab4RqDv5646ElgMCDtj2E2GZua07Z3Hb/s1600/Spiral+Rope+030.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Add 5 more loop beads.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQeRerBAiai9TgUkt7M4U4OSXDQU2yH5BPkNMlbMc0dg9ALyzrxkb2vJhAGdNqHvOd0h9OL5iqCCr8qoafI9oxeFE21zEI1-I3gpnEBKPK7NpxCSN5ObigCQ4CaxdCkStUp7IUJqEPCNmc/s1600/Spiral+Rope+033.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQeRerBAiai9TgUkt7M4U4OSXDQU2yH5BPkNMlbMc0dg9ALyzrxkb2vJhAGdNqHvOd0h9OL5iqCCr8qoafI9oxeFE21zEI1-I3gpnEBKPK7NpxCSN5ObigCQ4CaxdCkStUp7IUJqEPCNmc/s1600/Spiral+Rope+033.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Next, as you can tell, you need to pass upwards through the top three beads. Not a problem, right?<br />
<br />
One important thing to keep an eye on, as you get to loop 3, is to make sure you are creating a spiral. Spiral rope is just a bunch of loops around a central spine: it only spirals because you tell it to. The way to tell it to spiral counterclockwise (which is what I'm doing here) is to make sure you create each new loop directly to the left of the previous loop. If you hold your work vertically and look down, you should be able to see each new loop added on in a counterclockwise direction.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0kEs_JQDmcnVB-zuBeezKnkiXxcB3kduJ0DfHwQW-uc1vwOHjYYRmB8WKYxhTM4qruBlTEN6D6bOXZPlOr2LVwWtSxFcPIoKenMi1ONjVkVG8zqRU8lAV-LwYh8qA6x6TYO2nXXlZtqzY/s1600/Spiral+Rope+036.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0kEs_JQDmcnVB-zuBeezKnkiXxcB3kduJ0DfHwQW-uc1vwOHjYYRmB8WKYxhTM4qruBlTEN6D6bOXZPlOr2LVwWtSxFcPIoKenMi1ONjVkVG8zqRU8lAV-LwYh8qA6x6TYO2nXXlZtqzY/s1600/Spiral+Rope+036.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
OK, you're done with three loops! See how it's starting to spiral?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG1g29z8_WEzyurpsPEyDkxnZGGYgU2rrSZzcFFOAhb8KWMVy9zT4X4qKf168969pyZm0-Snxdk5lVl59Fh3zdI_iIkSa4nY51XExu1CB0myw5OnhGOWMgYJtBcXiCnUZoZDtEwTtY2EBW/s1600/Spiral+Rope+038a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG1g29z8_WEzyurpsPEyDkxnZGGYgU2rrSZzcFFOAhb8KWMVy9zT4X4qKf168969pyZm0-Snxdk5lVl59Fh3zdI_iIkSa4nY51XExu1CB0myw5OnhGOWMgYJtBcXiCnUZoZDtEwTtY2EBW/s1600/Spiral+Rope+038a.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Repeat Loop 3 over and over again until the spiral rope is as long as you want it to be, making sure you keep adding each new loop in a clockwise direction.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc0Ct8Ro764QuVBO4XyzNmo56fMAeFJEnXhAWYshy_9OKtPrROmXvZmNxQ44bc0O2wX2E7jWw0EBGO0dqLW_Y7jxglfLsObCPhR-GBN-FCbxHlnD-TPQERgEI_jlgaMJrCP-rrNW4KLgEb/s1600/Spiral+Rope+052.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc0Ct8Ro764QuVBO4XyzNmo56fMAeFJEnXhAWYshy_9OKtPrROmXvZmNxQ44bc0O2wX2E7jWw0EBGO0dqLW_Y7jxglfLsObCPhR-GBN-FCbxHlnD-TPQERgEI_jlgaMJrCP-rrNW4KLgEb/s1600/Spiral+Rope+052.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Here I have a short spiral rope of 8 loops. ...Yeah, it doesn't look to impressive, does it? Well, one way to define the spiral better is to add what I like to call "frill" beads. Frill beads connect the middle bead in each loop (remember when I mentioned to use an odd number of beads per loop?), and you can use any kind of bead you like. I'm just going to use some blue size 8s. Frill beads are <b>totally optional</b>, but I like the way they give shape to the spiral.<br />
<br />
To start adding frill beads, pass back down through the top three beads of the upmost loop.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUBUBoNDQZ8N4MFl4LR6KUx4vxxnfrtXkX_fLfSMhxsc1YvpWpLX94qPmfz1c0WoCIdSAuQJI5x2UrukkpzLuAK-oilXUTGK1yBvFG-wuu6nrgWKCEyJ5ajim4sRQRitBSyhWFa3e_kxM7/s1600/Spiral+Rope+053.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUBUBoNDQZ8N4MFl4LR6KUx4vxxnfrtXkX_fLfSMhxsc1YvpWpLX94qPmfz1c0WoCIdSAuQJI5x2UrukkpzLuAK-oilXUTGK1yBvFG-wuu6nrgWKCEyJ5ajim4sRQRitBSyhWFa3e_kxM7/s1600/Spiral+Rope+053.JPG" /></a></div><br />
String one one frill bead.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8mQXWFysFyms2d99VRG7UERhKb_FIGBhUAEOeXIi30vFD6XBP0bPU74pOe2HaOMy3jem6N2IWD9URkxr27nS9ypSjpvhMiDcjSu6bGb7DSpNqs1myA2DigJnZlNbXhgKyvuxv1aMRrVhv/s1600/Spiral+Rope+057.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8mQXWFysFyms2d99VRG7UERhKb_FIGBhUAEOeXIi30vFD6XBP0bPU74pOe2HaOMy3jem6N2IWD9URkxr27nS9ypSjpvhMiDcjSu6bGb7DSpNqs1myA2DigJnZlNbXhgKyvuxv1aMRrVhv/s1600/Spiral+Rope+057.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Find the second-highest loop: pass your needle down through the middle bead of that loop.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglmf01ixxRXdZbUk47Oo_w0sKDBduDvhokSaAoTgd7waehPwC5KRKPN7kuLG8BKtIFhtTGBe8gvedhHKa4OTJ8lMzOQtPD4AeHE32AmPsCnVROfckLYVvwg1LMMPzzRB8B3aaZ7hf2PR6O/s1600/Spiral+Rope+061.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglmf01ixxRXdZbUk47Oo_w0sKDBduDvhokSaAoTgd7waehPwC5KRKPN7kuLG8BKtIFhtTGBe8gvedhHKa4OTJ8lMzOQtPD4AeHE32AmPsCnVROfckLYVvwg1LMMPzzRB8B3aaZ7hf2PR6O/s1600/Spiral+Rope+061.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Here's one frill bead completely added in.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguXbPe1bmvCjPDZnV_JtE1435KXQbpNLK46fvrMxOpeBKmrNPOBZct4fWfRqG0WYHuBzA9sG70nm8hth2qcgx0R33UMARDMGR_WfkTrHQza-En0frHKvz_MseP4LZ9CXoXjwO9BmgDnHrY/s1600/Spiral+Rope+062.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguXbPe1bmvCjPDZnV_JtE1435KXQbpNLK46fvrMxOpeBKmrNPOBZct4fWfRqG0WYHuBzA9sG70nm8hth2qcgx0R33UMARDMGR_WfkTrHQza-En0frHKvz_MseP4LZ9CXoXjwO9BmgDnHrY/s1600/Spiral+Rope+062.JPG" /></a></div><br />
To add another one, string one frill bead, then pass your needle down through the middle bead of the next loop down. Repeat until you get back down to the very first loop, and you're done!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9rgDf-IH5M9aeO3K4KSTfLo_lvMB9UM52ee6gh1lUO8I74fFgRSnyBwA1xSodGMw3_9K2AK8eeT9IwWD7zBnd8F8MdbSVVqLMhdffiFwuHvL47Zs24_BuEV_jp-FLXfRtlgufT8f-REaW/s1600/Spiral+Rope+065.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9rgDf-IH5M9aeO3K4KSTfLo_lvMB9UM52ee6gh1lUO8I74fFgRSnyBwA1xSodGMw3_9K2AK8eeT9IwWD7zBnd8F8MdbSVVqLMhdffiFwuHvL47Zs24_BuEV_jp-FLXfRtlgufT8f-REaW/s1600/Spiral+Rope+065.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Here's the thread path while the piece is still 2D (a 3D threadpath would be beyond my capacity in a 2D graphics program!). As you can see, the stitch is just a bunch of beaded loops added to a vertical central spine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSsoWcPN7vvHMCkwUCq9Dk_vHbNDocGSjp-_n7jMaDnJOw7hn0iCPQYB1aQIyI-O2yH8_wu9fKJc15ppsMxRuNN7yItLRk2R2rDSCEowg4t7QuxmLROey0pNkNlVwseRkYObdKUx8rrqJn/s1600/Spiral+Rope+thread+path.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSsoWcPN7vvHMCkwUCq9Dk_vHbNDocGSjp-_n7jMaDnJOw7hn0iCPQYB1aQIyI-O2yH8_wu9fKJc15ppsMxRuNN7yItLRk2R2rDSCEowg4t7QuxmLROey0pNkNlVwseRkYObdKUx8rrqJn/s1600/Spiral+Rope+thread+path.jpg" /></a></div>Variations! <br />

Variation 1 is the bracelet that caused me to give up spiral rope for a couple of years the second that I completed it. It's so pretty, but I was so new to the technique I kept messing it up and having to redo sections of it... proof that you need a -smaller- project when you've just started working with a new technique! It uses size eights as core beads and mostly size 11s for loops. It's an example of double-spiral-rope, where you make <i>two </i>(differently-colored-and-shaped) loops per spine component.<br />
<br />
Variation 2 is from this tutorial, size eight seed beads with a 3:5 spine to loop ratio.<br />
<br />
Variation 3 is a differently-colored version of Variation 1, a double-spiral.<br />
<br />
Variation 4 is another double-spiral, with a ratio of 3 size eight spine seed beads to 6 size eleven loop beads, and to 4 size eleven and one size eight loop beads.<br />
<br />
Variation 5 is all size 11 seed beads, with a ratio of 3 spine beads to 4 loop beads.<br />
<br />
Variation 6 uses Japanese drops and size eleven seed beads as its spine, and it has a ratio of 3 drops and 3 size eleven seed beads to one loop of 5 seed beads. I used size eight seed beads for the frill.<br />
<br />
Variation 7 is a little more unusual, but I love the pronounced spiral. It has an approximate ratio of three spine size 11 seed beads to 4 size 11 loop beads: but in this case, the loops are more like spikes (to create a spiky loop like these, string four beads, pass down through the third, add two more). I used size 8 seed beads for the frill. I'll cover spiky loops and double-spiral rope in the forthcoming Spiral Rope: Advanced tutorial.<br />
<br />
Variation 8 is a pair of earrings where I used drops for both the spine and the frill.<br />
<br />
There you go! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, and I hope you try it out, because spiral rope is a lot prettier in person than it is in 2D pictures.Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-54518253396292755822011-01-01T11:45:00.000-08:002011-01-01T11:47:59.491-08:00A new year, a new beginning!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />

I love anything with drop beads, really, but just knotting them on embroidery floss allows the drops to take center stage. I like the frayed ends, too, that give it an almost unfinished or childish feel. It's crazily light to wear, too.<br />
<br />
It's made from Japanese drops, embroidery floss, copper crimps, jump rings, and a copper closure.Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-40264381434217439862010-12-30T09:22:00.000-08:002010-12-30T09:22:53.053-08:00Photo Post: ButterfliesEnjoy! <br />
The ending paragraphs about humans' need to close open loops were particularly interesting.<br />

I finally broke down and combined them, along with raku and tigers-eye beads, into a twisted little bracelet. It reminds me of the tropics, but kinda of the desert. It reminded my partner of Davy Jones' ship from the newer Pirates of the Caribbean movie.<br />
<br />
Hence the name.<br />
<br />
As previously mentioned, it's glass, crystal (swarovski 4s and 6es), tigers-eye, and raku ceramic beads.Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-11433415949753441442010-12-25T14:34:00.000-08:002010-12-28T13:11:00.320-08:00Kyohou Globe Earrings<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJvJMBAeczZx5OOC_bTLdZHl0Xhyphenhyphen1BxVse-FYKDHsQG66t15Pw5mQR3-M98xEpusmpptCq9DaJ56QYn_1K4fJwJmthDGxna3dJ8zuVm_pyzR0iSqf8ysD9IQgJyhUsET4VjbJnYMOFHke-/s1600/uzumekyohouglobeearrings.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJvJMBAeczZx5OOC_bTLdZHl0Xhyphenhyphen1BxVse-FYKDHsQG66t15Pw5mQR3-M98xEpusmpptCq9DaJ56QYn_1K4fJwJmthDGxna3dJ8zuVm_pyzR0iSqf8ysD9IQgJyhUsET4VjbJnYMOFHke-/s1600/uzumekyohouglobeearrings.jpg" /></a></div>These are named for the best grapes in the universe.<br />

They're another attempt at 'simple' earrings: simple meaning created out of only one headpin (and beads, of course). They feature size 4 double AB'd swarovskis (I'm not sure what color they are precisely-- the double ABs fade together for me) and my simplest beaded beads. The beads are size 11 seed beads right angle woven over a base of 6 Japanese drop beads. These earrings are about 1.75 cm, again sans hooks.<br />

I'm not sure <i>when </i>I'd wear these, but I do like them.Uzumehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01077438928478864333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010610050768112519.post-6001364523121717632010-12-25T14:28:00.000-08:002010-12-28T13:10:40.098-08:00Wisteria Window Earrings<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZHz4ZmwP3YxV0s9zdsAMO7ZGv5NuK_HAnGf2KT4iqxIkv3Jtw31r6cj0TzOphSVj2Fp_fMMeKKoHSVami2-K4XeoVcd0T69jp2vE1Zc4dLMRff2DjL71rkLHkvBcJ_Ho6G49RGN0xWK9V/s1600/uzumewisteriawindowearrings.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZHz4ZmwP3YxV0s9zdsAMO7ZGv5NuK_HAnGf2KT4iqxIkv3Jtw31r6cj0TzOphSVj2Fp_fMMeKKoHSVami2-K4XeoVcd0T69jp2vE1Zc4dLMRff2DjL71rkLHkvBcJ_Ho6G49RGN0xWK9V/s1600/uzumewisteriawindowearrings.jpg" /></a></div>These are my attempt at 'simple earrings'.
